Should I Start a Home Business and Quit My Job?

by: Richard Driver

Are you seriously thinking about quitting your job and starting a home business? Does this sound like you? When something happens at work that you do not agree with, do you find yourself drifting away in your imagination to the day that you will have your own business and be your own boss?

On the other hand, maybe the thought of having your own business is a means of escape from that long boring drive to and from work each day…Or maybe it provides relief from the resentment you feel toward an unappreciative boss, or a co-worker who got the promotion that you feel was rightfully yours.

Admittedly, the thought of starting a home business, being your own boss, and making a lot of money, is pleasurable and sounds like something that everyone should do. Right? Well! Maybe not. In fact, for a great many people who enter the field of self-employment, the result is financial ruin and oftentimes bankruptcy.

Now before I scatter your dreams too badly, let me quickly emphasize that many people are making it big in a home business and prospering beyond their expectations. If they can do it, so can you. Right? Perhaps, but before answering that, let us consider what exactly is involved in having a home business versus keeping your present job.

You have probably heard the old saying, "don't judge another until you have walked in their shoes." The same holds true for start-up of a home business. In other words, you cannot properly answer the question, “should I start a home business and quit my job,” nor can you realistically judge what your chance of success will be in a home business until you have experienced it.

You need to "walk in the shoes of a home business owner" to actually experience first hand what it is like to have your own business and to be your own boss and to see how much money you can make, and how difficult or easy it is to make it.

However, you need to do this in a safe manner - a way that does not jeopardize your present job and that cost very little or no money, other than the few dollars that you most likely will have to spend on advertising.

To determine if a home business is right for you - in a “safe manner” - would require that you keep your job for the present time and sign up as an affiliate with a website that provides the type of service or product that you would want to offer if you had your own home business.

Look for websites that offer free affiliation programs. Some websites refer to their affiliation programs as "partnerships” or “associates.” Moreover, make sure that the sign up is free and that the products or services being offered pays a sales commission of 25% or more to you when you refer someone to the website who purchases the product or service.

If you not familiar with how affiliate programs work, you can visit http://softwarepak.biz/bslistsaffiliate.html for an explanation. Moreover, you can type in "affiliates, affiliate program, the affiliates, earn money on-line," "partnerships,” “associates,” or a similar variation into Google or another of your favorite search engines.

Click on the website links that interest you, and read the provided materials regarding affiliates. This will give you a quick education on how affiliate programs operate and of which ones you want to be associated.

When you actually do sign on with one or more as an affiliate, the website offering the affiliation will provide you with a URL link that potential customers can click on and if they purchase the product or service, you will receive a sales commission.

Starting out this way will give you the opportunity to maintain your present job while you determine if a home business is right for you.

It will reveal whether you are able to give the investment of time and commitment that is necessary to nurture your newborn home business into a successful full-grown money making business.

In addition, it will reveal whether a home business can provide the necessary financial resources to meet the needs of yourself and family.

If a home business is right for you, that is great, and you may want to consider getting your own domain name and website, and offer your own affiliate program so that others can promote your business for you.

If, however, you find that a home business is not right for you, then you still have your job.
